Therapy garden seating and shelters, Falkirk Hospital
The NHS and Central Scotland Forest Trust wanted to create a therapy garden and safe environment in which patients at the secure unit at the new Forth Valley Royal Hospital near Falkirk could step out and enjoy the fresh air, peace, quiet and privacy. At the same time, the garden had to be low maintenance and delivered within budget.
As we have specialised in hand-carved bespoke seating, supplied with inscriptions, for over 14 years. We were chosen to design, manufacture and supply seating and shelters for the new therapy garden.
We were able provide a shelter solution for all weathers in the shape of two cube units with integrated shade sails. The cube units were made from burnt green oak, which is colourfast and requires no maintenance.
We also manufactured and supplied a pair of maintenance-free, comfortable and safe solid green oak benches which were delivered on site fully assembled to save time and labour costs.
The benches were specified with carved poetry quotations on the backrests. The quotations were hand-inscribed by us, and the words were written by the patients in conjunction with poet Andy Manders of Artlink Central.
NHS Forth Valley Charge Nurse, Margaret Hutchins said, “I think getting back to nature is very therapeutic for our patients. They feel safe sitting in the garden and also enjoy the wildlife … I think it is crucial for patients to have their own space; it becomes part of their recovery process.”
